    4 Common Orthopedic Procedures

Orthopedic surgery is a term used to explain a variety of procedures that treat muscular and skeletal conditions using both surgical and non-surgical methods. It is usually recommended for the restoration or preservation of functionality in the spine or limbs.

It can include joint treatments, bone disease, spinal disorders, damage to muscles and ligaments and other musculoskeletal problems. Here’s a look at a few of the most common orthopedic procedures performed.

    Broken Bones and Fractures

One of the most common orthopedic treatments is for broken and fractured bones. The doctor will set the break and apply a splint or cast to allow the injury to heal. In some cases physical therapy may be required to rebuild limb strength following the removal of a cast.

    Joint Replacement

One of the most serious common orthopedic procedures is the replacement of a joint. This can include the hip, knee, shoulder, ankle or other joints. It can be used to treat joints that are worn down by age, injury, disease or even arthritis. The procedure involves removing the damaged joint and replacing it with an artificial one that moves just like the original. Usually following this kind of surgery, extended physical therapy is recommended to restore healthy mobility.

    Arthroscopic Surgery

Arthroscopic surgery is less invasive than traditional surgery and involves the use of a small camera and light source using fiber optic cables to allow the surgeon to look at the surgical area. It can be performed on a wide variety of injuries to the knee, hip, shoulder and other areas of the body. It allows for less tissue damage, smaller incisions and a much faster healing time than traditional surgical procedures.

    Spinal Surgery

For patients suffering from a variety of back issues, spinal surgery can be indicated. This is particularly common in cases of herniated, bulged or slipped discs. Surgery to the spine is generally only indicated if physical therapy and medication don’t work to take care of the patient’s back pain problems. Osteoporosis can also sometimes be treated by spinal surgery in severe cases, and this kind of surgery may also be required to correct fractures or deformities in the spine.

    ACL Procedures

ACL stands for “anterior cruciate ligament,” and is the major ligament involved in stabilizing your knee. Ruptured or torn ACL ligaments are painful and serious injuries that can be treated using orthopedic reconstruction procedures. Athletes in particular are subject to ACL injuries but they can happen to anyone due to impact, twisting or shifting wrong during physical activities.

    When is Surgery Indicated?

In general, orthopedic surgical procedures are only indicated in cases where other forms of therapy have failed. Before surgery, a number of different approaches should be attempted, including medications such as anti-inflammatories, cortisone and hyaluronic acid, orthotics, physical therapy, and other non-invasive treatments.
